I have a 69 vw beetle. I just recently replaced the fuel pump. Now when I turn the key it won't start. I have to clutch start it push start it all the time. It'll take 2 of you- if one gets under the car in between the wheels on the passenger side towards the back of the car, stick out your right arm up into where the engine compartment is, there will be the starter motor. As one of you is in the cab, turning the key, the other wants to be giving the stater motor a good whack with a universal adjusting tool hammer If you run the car for a while, take it out for a few miles to get some juice in its battery then it still wont start without a bump or a whack, its your alternator or wiring for the alternator I would expect you have knocked some electrics whilst replacing your fuel pump and not noticed.
Double check everything is going where it is supposed to, my friend managed to gut his bug when a fuel line dripped onto some electrics, it was a very sad day It turns out it was just the wire running from the ignition to the starter. Only when I park on a hill is this possibl I have a Vw bug that will not start unless I push start it or jump it with a screwdriver from the starter to solenoid. Other than that the key just gives a Click clunk sound. I have replaced t I can not start my bug unless it has jumper cables attached to it.
When I turn the key without jumper cables attached all i get is nothin. I have checked the starter and silanoid both are working, thWhen I turn the key, the lights come one, but the starter doesn't make a sound. Popping the clutch while someone pushes from behind starts it, and I tried airing out the distributor cap. Procedures on how to test the starter and solenoid should be avoided, as I'm 95 percent sure they aren't the problem either.
Battery 1 get it load tested It may turn on the lights but that ain't the starter, is it? It may be new and it still may be a junk battery. Starter solenoid 2 or check to be sure all the wires are connected to it and that means crawling under the car and have a physical look.
A small black or green wire which comes from the ignition switch needs to be connected to a tang right there on the starter solenoid. And the factory wiring is strong enough. Nothing more is needed. The problem you describe is common among VW's.
The power to activate the starter solnoid goes from the battery in the rear, all the way forward to the ignition switch, then all the way back to the starter. My personal ultimate solution was to insall a heavy wire from the battery to a hidden push button by the seat, and then to the solnoid.
By disconnecting the old wire from the ignition I made the bug just a little harder to steal. Mine has a similar issue but the starter turns over like the battery is dead but its not.CLASSIC VW- 1972 SUPER BEETLE PART 27 ( STARTING PROBLEMS).

This is an emergency post of sorts, I went to start up the car today and So like any responsable TDI owner I have rushed to the forums for advice When it goes to start you can here the solenoid engage and the teeth must be engaging the flywheel as the lights all dim and if you hurry you can smell the motor heating up under the hood.
So the solenoid works, its drawing current, and the starter gear is engaging the flywheel. Turn key, Click of solenoid, burning motor.
The starter is new ishI replaced it about two weeks ago with a remanufactured Bosch part from Orielly. I had taken the old one out after it started to have problems disengaging, I re-lubed it, put it back together, and it was fine for about two months before it started again, hence the new to me part.
I am going to try to taking the new one out in the parking lot tomorrow and test it to make sure it is working properly, but my hopes are rather dim at this point, in other words I think the starter is fine.
Now heres where I need some help, if the starter is proven to be in working condition, any idea what I could be looking at here? For some more background and to think aloud I checked a few things while waiting for a ride I checked the control wiring terminal and it seemed to be secure, also indicated by the fact the starter tries to work but seems to be meeting alot of resistance.
I checked the oil level, I thought it could be that the drain plug came loose and it all came out and it seized at exactly the moment I turned it off in the lot. But that was not the case, the oil is a bit low but not enough to cause problems.
Initially I thought transmission but it rolls in neutral and I can shift through all the gears. That and the flywheel is engine side of things so that kind of killed that idea right off the bat.
I changed the timing belt out at 85k, its got about k now, but that would have been a rather explosive ending while running. Im really at a loss Things to check or try, wise tips, support. As a side note I'm in Atlanta so its not the cold. Its late and I have to get to work in the morning, I have a ride thankfully. And yes it has fuel Put car in 5th gear with hand brake off and go push on the back bumper. This will rotate the engine in its normal direction. It will be hard to push, but keep at it and you should feel the engine slowly rotate and the car slowly move forward.

If it does, that means the engine is free to rotate and starter is pooped. If you cannot move the engine, then something is wrong inside the engine. Don't force it. If engine does not rotate, take the plastic cover off the timing belt and check tension. If belt is loose, it could have jumped time on the last shutdown.
I did find this but it didn't help much Thanks ski, I will try that if I cant find a way to get to the flywheel and rotate it with a screwdriver. That thread I found mentioned it and I seem to remember doing it during the timing belt change. Take the rubber plug out of the timing hole in the top of the flywheel housing right where tranny meets engine. Should be able to pry there, but airbox is kinda in the way.

Hit the solenoid "moderately" with a mechanic hammer, one or two dry blows, if next crank try works, then the mechanism is getting seized and needs maintenance. Battery should be sound and well charged.

This absorbed heat adds resistance to the electrical conductors inside the starter. The additional resistance results in the starter requiring more amperage than it normally does when cool.
The TOTAL effect of all this unwanted resistance is a dramatically reduced current flow, which in turn means the starter is limited in current, and therefore either turns very slowly or not at all. The starter solenoid is equally vulnerable to this condition, and thus may not activate the starter at all. At some point, cleaning the battery terminals and connectors may no longer help if the corrosion has already spread throughout the length of the cables.
Heat soak can usually be solved by installing a heat shield on the starter; this will reflect the heat away from starter. You can likely find a used heat shield at a salvage yard, or source a new one from your local parts store.
Other fixes can involve upgrading the battery cables with a heavier gauge cable or installing a higher capacity battery. Anything that will keep the starter cooler or allow more amperage to the starter should help considerably. Slow cranking. Won't start when hot. A rriiiip sound as the starter spins. No click, no start. First and foremost, make sure both of the mounting bolts are tight. The upper one is also the top right engine mounting bolt. It should have a square or half-moon head to prevent it from turning when you are tightening the nut on the other side of the firewall.
If a PO has replaced this bolt with a hex-head one, you will probably have a hard time keeping it from turning when you're tightening it. Best plan -- get the proper bold and save yourself lots of headaches and bruised arms! This is very important - a note in the "Idiot Book" says, ""If this bolt is loose your starter will stick. A "Big Click" when you're attempting to start. The electrical path for the solenoid is from battery in the back, to the key and back to the solenoid - a long path with several connectors on the way, so poor connections or a broken electrical section of the key mechanism can cause this.
The electrical section for the key is replaceable. If you can short the heavy wire on the starter to the thin wire connector with another length of wire this is what turning the key does and the car starter works OK, then it's probably in the key or the wiring to the key car in neutral and hand brake on HARD for this test - you have to crawl under the car to get at the starter. Two of them do indeed connect to the ignition switch; the third is an extension of the large bolt to which the wire from the battery connects.
Naturally I had the wire from the ignition switch connected to the wrong spade connector on the solenoid. It tells you power is getting to the solenoid. At that point the decision tree branches. Either the contact bar in the solenoid is worn or corroded or otherwise damaged so that it is not capable of doing its job which is to connect the battery to the starter or the solenoid isn't getting enough power to press the contact bar closed.
There are some variations on this theme but they have different signatures. The above should make it pretty clear that diagnosis is based on a complete understanding of how the system operates.I'm no master electrician, but I can't find any shorts anywhere, all the fuses are fine. I haven't been able to test the generator, but to the best of my knowledge, that won't cause the car not to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I've been fighting with this thing for three weeks, and I can't afford to take it to a mechanic. Do you. Check all lead are ok, check spark at each lead, do same as for coil.
